PSG Defeats Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Claim Trophee des Champions Super Cup in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on fourteen different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to seize a surprise lead. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing penalty win.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the past thirteen seasons.
